Topic: Issues with China Granite
    Posted: 10 Dec 2008 at 1:19am

In working with a US furniture importer, I recently received 300 sink cabinets with granite tops. The granite is a plain black granite with various colored specks. The finish almost seems cloudy. There are small but not cable scratches on the surface. The Chinese manufacturer says covering the top with some sort of Wax, then buffing with a .0000 sell Wool will cover the scratches and leave the granite with a nice finish. What is recommended to fix such granite. Does anyone feel I may be getting a stone other than granite based on this info?

ok, firstly can i ask you if the tops wereexpensive or cheap? more than likeley they were very cheap, i have seen thistype of stone before, the waxing of this will only sort this out as a temperarysolution and is most definatley not the answer, when a scartch appears on thesurface of granite the only way to get rid is to repolish the whole surface andstart again, and the machinery alone is expensive never mind the skill involved, did your boss just buy these off the internet or did he travel over to china toinspect the finished product ?
in this industry you will to an extent get what you pay for, and you reallyshouldknow the difference between bad stone and good stone before you go makingany purchases and that goes for anybody, research is the key.

“没有检查就拿货,肯定危险。”

I agree withhim, it too much work once you damaged the surface of the granite. Even if youpolish it, you cant be sure to see if the result will be acceptable. You mustfirst inspect the granites before you buy them. Even professional installerssometimes make a mistake in picking damaged granites.

I agree with this - if your grade of stone is cheap, then this could be aproblem..
Interestingly enough; I wrote an article some time ago looking at 3 types of Nero Absoluto for Granite Worktops, which covers the two types of Nero Absoluto from China- One type from the Shanxi region and theother from the Mongolian region of China.
Both types are highly sort after by consumers and are almost jet black with thequality grades..
It does sound like you have been sold something of either poor quality, ormaybe not Nero Absoluto - China Black Granite.
Have you got a picture of the stone that we could see?
Speak soon, Alan

I had no idea that there was an issue with Granite from China. Thanks for letting me know.

Actually, I must say here that it is notreally an issue. China granite, if you are talking about the good stuff, is extremely sort after!

Poor quality stone can be found everywhere- poor quality stone is really the issue!

Ciaofor now!

Carpet tampa

Agree guysonce work get damaged it been very difficult to rework and always qualityproblem with china.

maybethere are one step they must haven't do it well. so it make the surface likethat. We are a professional manufacturer and exporter of natural stoneproducts.

I also don't believe in chines product.

Some of the responses here are confusing the technicality of reworking stone with the economic feasibility of reworking stone vanity tops.

Granitearm, Jerwin, and Hart are spot-on in their assessments.

Barring deep acid damage from, say hydrofluoric acid, or extremely deep scratches, a competent refinisher would have NO PROBLEM taking care of finish damage on "granite" vanity tops. This is true whether the stone was from China, the USA, Brazil, or the moon, for that matter.

Keep your eyes on the ball - consider this: How much were the vanity tops; how high is the rejection rate; is the cost to comply with the contract (fixing the stone) less if the tops were  replaced instead of refinished; and FINALLY - How much will it cost to comply with the contract, and how long will this take?

The question is not whether all "granite" from China is inferior. I happen to agree there generally ARE problems with the quality of what China exports to the U.S.  I fail to see how that particular piece of tectonic plate would be entirely different from all the others on planet Earth, however.

The original post - from TWO YEARS AGO - was an appeal for info, as to how to fix the stone, and whether or not the material was actually granite.  I think it's safe to say the poster has moved on.

For anyone interested, scratches in granite are never fixed with steel wool. Wax, permanent marker, powdered carbon, lead oxide, black hexavalent chromium crayon, aniline dyes, and iron oxide pigment are all common cosmetic approaches - some quite toxic - to hide scratches. The scratches will still show in bright or reflected light.

These were furniture tops. If they're supposed to be standard and higher quality, the finish must be basically flawless - not scratched up.

As to stone products from China - as long as there's a market for defective material and products, they'll keep selling into that market.

My personal advice to all you "professionals": If you wouldn't accept something for your own home, you should NOT be accepting it for your customers. Have some integrity - and also ACT like you do. This is how we do what's right for ourselves, our industry, and our country.

China can do better. Time to stand up straight, and demand better from them.

Hello! dear sir/madam, I'm sorry to hear that about China stone. :( But I have to figure out that the quality matter is not the reason of where it produce.

:0 I'm the stone supplier in China. We have the good quality stone if you want to pay a good price.

I think you may know Shanxi black (The purest black granite in the world from China) and Absolute black(from India)? They are all black granite. But I can say Shanxi black is much more expensive than Absolute black or anyother black granite from China. :)If you pay the equal price of Absolute black to buy the Shanxi Black, I can say that you have to consider the quality of the granite for it is impossible to buy shanxi black with the equal price of absolute black. And Maybe you don't know there are many kinds of pure black granite in China. That's a big problem!!

'cause many customers only inquiry about "what's the price of 'China black'"??? Then there are a lot of China supplier quote for you, but their black granite may be not the same!! It is why you may receive a much high price and a much low price for the "China black".

We must notice that sometimes the price shows the quality.

So Please do not attribute the issue to "China". The quality issues will appear all over the world. It depends on your selection at some extents.

We are a reliable China stone supplier. Obtain your trust is our most motivation. :)

We are always looking forward to hearing from you.
